Round Table - Women in Science

25.06.2016 14:00

Second Round Table on the program „Share your knowledge – become a mentor 2015/2016“ on the topic "Women in Science" will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at  2.00 pm.

Women have been allowed to an access to higher education for more than a century, but the number of those who are at the top of some research institution is still very small, and the path towards that direction remains challenging. The number of women who are appointed as Dean is below ten, and the number is slightly higher for women who are at the positions of Deputy Dean and of those who are managers of research projects.

In order for a position of women in science to be improved, it is necessary to work on further popularization of the science among the young girls; especially it is necessary to the work on the fight against the existing discouragement of the girls to deal with natural sciences. Data shows that more of them choose colleges of social studies 45%, while technical colleges are attended by approximately 25%. Women lack models of successful women in science, but it does not mean that those women do not exist, but instead that, but only if they have remained invisible.

Our mentors and mentees will meet on Saturday with our female guests that come from this sector to discuss status of women in science, the challenges and obstacles.

This will help to create opportunities for these women to improve their career path in order to achieve positive change and to set a sound basis for future long-term cooperation. Model of mentoring has been widely promoted internationally and successfully implemented in several countries. Taking into account our environment and social conditions, the model has been slightly adapted to the target group in the Republic of Serbia.
